Boston Area Public High School Elite College Placement Index
An objective, data-driven analysis of public high schools in the Greater Boston Area, including traditional, magnet, and charter schools. We use our proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.
The Greater Boston Educational Landscape
The Greater Boston area is renowned for its rich academic history and is home to some of the most high-performing public high schools in the nation. The region's educational landscape is largely defined by affluent suburban districts that serve as strong pipelines to elite universities, alongside the unique dynamics of the Boston Public Schools system, which includes nationally-ranked exam, charter, and magnet schools. Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) highlights a clear concentration of top-tier schools in the wealthy suburbs west of Boston, often referred to as the "Metro West" region.

Data Sources & References
This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns. Due to the lack of a centralized reporting system, no single source is complete. Our model is based on a combination of the following:
Primary Data Sources
- Publicly Available School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed data comes from high-achieving high schools and districts that voluntarily compile and publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations (e.g., Newton South, Cambridge Rindge & Latin). These are the gold standard for specific placements.
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE): Provides foundational data on school demographics, graduation rates, and statewide post-secondary enrollment trends, which are used to contextualize matriculation outcomes.
Secondary & Supporting Sources
- Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms like Niche.com and U.S. News & World Report compile data from various sources, including the U.S. Department of Education. This data is used for cross-referencing and modeling, particularly for schools that do not publish official lists.
- "Post-Secondary Pathways" Research Report: The foundational qualitative analysis for this project, which synthesizes information from the sources listed above to build a profile for each school.
Disclaimer: All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's demographic profile and available data.
Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling.
ECPI Score Components & Weighting
The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- T25 National University Matriculation (30%): Modeled percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University (e.g., Ivy League, MIT, Stanford).
- T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (20%): Modeled percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College (e.g., Williams, Amherst).
- MA Powerhouse Matriculation (25%): Modeled percentage of graduates attending Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Tufts University, or UMass Amherst.
- State & Community College Pathway (10%): Modeled percentage attending other MA state universities and community colleges, recognizing these vital pathways.
- College Readiness Score (15%): An internal score reflecting the academic rigor, AP/specialized programs, and overall college-preparatory focus described in the research report.
Psychometric & Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall regional average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Boston context.
