Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2026 period.
A Singular Focus: Measuring Elite College Placement
Most school rankings attempt to measure everything from student-teacher ratios to survey-based opinions on school culture. While these factors are important, they are often subjective and don't always correlate with a school's primary academic mission: preparing students for the future. The Chicardgo School ECPI takes a different approach. We focus on one tangible, verifiable outcome: a high school's track record for placing its graduates into the nation's most elite universities.
Our philosophy is simple: we prioritize outcomes over inputs. Instead of relying on subjective surveys, self-reported data, or metrics that don't guarantee success (like spending per student), we measure what a school actually achieves. The ECPI is built on the belief that the most accurate way to assess a high school's college preparatory strength is to look at where its students actually enroll.
Ranking Factors Explained
Our index is built exclusively on data points that reflect successful placement into top-tier higher education. The specific weights are adjusted for each metropolitan area to account for the unique role of local and state universities, but the core components are consistent:
1. T25 National University & T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (Highest Weight): This is the cornerstone of the ECPI. It directly measures a school's success in sending graduates to the most selective institutions in the country. This is a direct reflection of a school's ability to prepare students to compete at the highest academic level.
2. Top In-State & Regional University Placement (Varies by Region): We recognize the immense value and prestige of flagship state universities (like the UC system, UT Austin, or UVA). This component measures placement into these key institutions, with its weight adjusted based on the prominence of the state's public university system.
3. College Readiness Score (Standard Weight): This component provides a broader view of the academic environment. It is an objective score derived from participation and performance on college-level exams (AP/IB) and, where available, average SAT/ACT scores. It quantifies the academic rigor and preparation offered to the student body as a whole.
Core Psychometric Principles
The integrity of our index rests on a consistent and fair statistical approach. Our methodology is built on two core psychometric principles to ensure that scores are comparable and meaningful across diverse regions:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): A raw percentage of students attending a top university can be misleading without context. Therefore, for each component of the ECPI score, we analyze the range of performance across all schools in that specific regional database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. A school with the lowest raw score in a category receives a 0, the highest receives a 100, and all others are scaled proportionally. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to its direct peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we calculate the mean of all these scores across all schools in that region. We then apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This standardizes the index across different cities, making 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within that area's context.

General Disclaimer
All data presented on this website use modeling making statistical assumptions to represent and analyze data from the real world, reflecting the 2020-2026 period. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect most likely outcomes based on verified school demographic profile and available data. They are not official counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
