Chicago Public High School Elite College Placement Index
An objective, data-driven analysis of public high schools in the Chicago metropolitan area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.
The Chicago Area's Educational Landscape
The Chicago metropolitan area presents a complex and varied public education system. Within the city, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) operates a diverse portfolio of schools, including nationally-ranked selective enrollment high schools (Magnets), a robust network of Charter schools, and traditional neighborhood schools. Surrounding the city are the suburban districts, particularly those in the North Shore and western suburbs, which are renowned for their consistently high performance, extensive resources, and strong pipelines to top-tier universities. Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) reflects this dynamic, with CPS selective enrollment schools, top-performing charter networks, and elite suburban high schools all dominating the top of the rankings.

Data Sources & References
This project synthesizes data from multiple public sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns in the Chicago metropolitan area. Our model is based on a combination of the following:
Primary Data Sources
- Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Report Card: Provides foundational data for every public school, including postsecondary enrollment rates, graduation rates, and student demographics. This is the primary source for our 4-Year College Enrollment metric.
- Publicly Available School & District Profiles: The most detailed data on specific college destinations comes from high-achieving schools and districts that voluntarily publish multi-year matriculation lists (e.g., New Trier, Hinsdale Central, Walter Payton). These are critical for modeling the T25 National University and T15 Liberal Arts College metrics.
- University of Chicago's To & Through Project: Offers in-depth, longitudinal data and analysis on the postsecondary outcomes of Chicago Public Schools graduates, providing crucial context for the city's complex educational landscape.
Secondary & Supporting Sources
- Third-Party Data Aggregators (e.g., Niche.com, U.S. News & World Report): These platforms compile data from various sources, including user surveys and public records. This data is used for cross-referencing and modeling, particularly for out-of-state and private university placements where official data is unavailable.
Important Disclaimer: All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period based on the referenced research report. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2025 period.
ECPI Score Components & Weighting
The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- T25 National University Matriculation (30%): An estimate of the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University, modeled from school profiles and qualitative data.
- T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (20%): An estimate of the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College, modeled from school profiles and qualitative data.
- 4-Year College Enrollment Rate (20%): Based on the percentage of graduates enrolling in a 4-year college within 12-16 months, primarily from ISBE data.
- Academic Environment Score (15%): A qualitative score (1-10) based on curriculum rigor, AP/IB offerings, and competitive environment as described in the research report.
- College Readiness Score (15%): A score (1-10) reflecting student preparedness, based on average SAT/ACT scores (where available) and graduation rates.
Psychometric Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we calculate the mean of all these scores across all schools. We then apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Chicago Area context.
Disclaimer: This index is for informational purposes only. It is one of many tools parents and students can use to evaluate schools. We encourage families to consider a wide range of factors, including school culture, program offerings, and individual student needs.
