Chicago Private School Elite College Placement Index
An objective, data-driven analysis of private and independent high schools in the Chicago metropolitan area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.
The Chicago Area's Private School Landscape
The Chicago metropolitan area boasts a rich and diverse private high school landscape, offering a wide array of educational philosophies and academic programs. The scene is dominated by a handful of elite, academically rigorous day schools within the city and in the affluent North Shore suburbs. These institutions, such as the University of Chicago Lab Schools and the Latin School, are powerful feeders to the nation's most selective universities. Complementing them is a strong network of Catholic high schools, like Saint Ignatius and Loyola Academy, which combine a faith-based education with strong academics and athletics, consistently sending graduates to top-tier universities nationwide.

Data Sources & References
This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for private schools. The primary data sources are those published by the schools themselves.
Primary Data Sources
- Official School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed and reliable data comes from the official "School Profile" documents and multi-year matriculation lists published by the private schools themselves. These are the gold standard for this analysis and are used to model all performance metrics.
- School Websites and Annual Reports: Information regarding curriculum, average test scores, and student body size is primarily sourced from official school websites and publicly available annual reports.
Secondary & Supporting Sources
- Third-Party Data Aggregators (e.g., Niche.com, Private School Review): These platforms compile data from various sources, including user surveys and public records. This data is used for cross-referencing and for schools where official matriculation lists are not readily available.
Important Disclaimer
All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2025 period.
ECPI Score Components & Weighting
The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- T25 National University Matriculation (30%): An estimate of the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University, modeled from school profiles.
- T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (20%): An estimate of the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College, modeled from school profiles.
- 4-Year College Enrollment Rate (20%): Based on the percentage of graduates enrolling in a 4-year college.
- Academic Environment Score (15%): A qualitative score (1-10) based on curriculum rigor, AP/IB offerings, and competitive environment as described in school profiles.
- College Readiness Score (15%): A score (1-10) reflecting student preparedness, based on average SAT/ACT scores reported by the school.
Psychometric & Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. A school with the lowest raw score in a category receives a 0, the highest receives a 100, and all others are scaled proportionally. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we calculate the mean of all these scores across all schools. We then apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This final step standardizes the index, making 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Chicago private school context.
