Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from the "Post-Secondary Pathways" research report to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns. The model is based on a combination of the following data types mentioned in the report:

Primary Data Types

  • District-Level Post-Secondary Enrollment Rates: High-level data from state departments of education (DC, MD, VA, WV) on college-going trends.
  • Lists of College Acceptances: Published by some high schools and districts, showing the range of institutions where students were admitted.
  • Aggregated User Data: From platforms like Niche.com and Parchment, indicating colleges of interest and common application/acceptance destinations.
  • College Preparatory Program Information: Data on the availability and strength of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Enrollment (DE) programs.

Modeling Approach

  • For schools with specific matriculation data (e.g., Arlington Tech, Dunbar High), those figures are used directly.
  • For schools without specific data, outcomes are modeled based on district-wide trends, the strength of their academic programs (AP/IB/DE), and demographic context (e.g., the strong HBCU pipeline for DCPS schools).
  • The "Top Destinations" lists are synthesized from a combination of explicit acceptance lists, user interest data, and dominant regional pipelines (e.g., the strong flow from Northern Virginia to UVA, VT, and GMU).

Important Disclaimer: All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, based on the comprehensive research report. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. Matriculation numbers and percentages are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless explicitly cited in the source report.

Rating Methodology

Our D.C. Metro Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on the research report and statistical modeling.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability. This model is designed to reflect the unique post-secondary pathways of the D.C. metropolitan area.

  • T25 National University (35%): Measures matriculation to Top 25 National Universities, rewarding placement at the nation's most selective research universities.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College (15%): Recognizes placement at elite small colleges, a significant alternative pathway for top students.
  • In-State/Regional Flagship Pipeline (20%): Measures the strength of a school's pipeline to its primary state or regional flagship public universities (e.g., University of Virginia, University of Maryland, George Mason University).
  • HBCU Matriculation Strength (10%): Measures matriculation to leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This component specifically acknowledges the vital and historic role these institutions play.
  • College Readiness Score (20%): An internal score reflecting the strength, breadth, and accessibility of a school's college preparatory programs (AP/IB/DE).

Psychometric Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is scaled between 0 and 100.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score, we adjust the scores linearly to set a target mean of 70. This standardizes the index, making 70 a benchmark for a "strong" performance within the D.C. Metro context.
