Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for D.C. Metro Area private schools.

Primary Data Sources

  • Official School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most reliable and detailed data comes directly from the schools themselves. Many of the schools in this analysis publish annual school profiles or multi-year matriculation lists that provide specific college enrollment data for their graduating classes.
  • School Websites and Publications: Additional context and data points are gathered from school websites, official news articles, and alumni magazines which often highlight notable college placements.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms compiling data from various sources are used for cross-referencing and modeling for schools that do not publish comprehensive, public lists.

Important Disclaimer

All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only. The matriculation numbers and percentages are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's public profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Rating Methodology

Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability. This model is designed to reflect the unique post-secondary pathways of the D.C. metropolitan area.

  • T25 National University (35%): Measures matriculation to Top 25 National Universities, rewarding placement at the nation's most selective research universities.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College (15%): Recognizes placement at elite small colleges, a significant alternative pathway for top students.
  • In-State/Regional Flagship Pipeline (20%): Measures the strength of a school's pipeline to its primary state or regional flagship public universities (e.g., University of Virginia, University of Maryland).
  • HBCU Matriculation Strength (10%): Measures matriculation to leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
  • College Readiness Score (20%): An internal score reflecting a school's academic rigor, resources, faculty qualifications, and overall national reputation.

Psychometric & Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the D.C. Metro context.
