Los Angeles Private High School Elite College Placement Index

An objective, data-driven analysis of private and independent high schools in the Los Angeles County area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (LA-ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.

The Los Angeles Private School Landscape

The Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to a vast and influential private high school landscape, featuring some of the most prestigious and academically rigorous institutions in the country. This ecosystem is characterized by a concentration of elite, non-sectarian day schools in affluent areas like the Westside and Pasadena, which serve as powerful pipelines to the Ivy League and other top-tier universities. The region also boasts a strong network of Catholic high schools with long traditions of academic and athletic excellence. Our Elite College Placement Index (LA-ECPI) highlights the dominance of these top-tier day schools, which consistently achieve outstanding college placement results.

Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple public sources to create an illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for Los Angeles area private high schools.

Primary Data Sources

  • School-Published Matriculation Lists & Profiles: The primary source for private school data is their own published materials. Elite private schools almost universally publish detailed, multi-year matriculation lists as a key marketing and informational tool for prospective families.
  • University of California Information Center: The UC system's public data portal provides reliable, aggregate statistics on applications, admissions, and enrollments from private high schools, offering a verified baseline for UC performance.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms compiling data from various sources (e.g., surveys, self-reports) are used for cross-referencing and modeling.
  • Local News & Community Reports: Publications in affluent areas often report on the college destinations of local private school graduates.

Important Disclaimer

All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers and percentages are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Rating Methodology

Our Los Angeles Elite College Placement Index (LA-ECPI) for private schools is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The index is based on a modeled dataset created from publicly available school profiles.

LA-ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total LA-ECPI score is a weighted average of four components. Each component is first scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure fair comparison.

  • T25 National University Matriculation (45%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (25%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
  • Other UC System Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending any University of California campus (excluding UC Berkeley and UCLA).
  • College Readiness Score (20%): Based on an internal score reflecting AP/IB rates, average test scores, and student-teacher ratio.

Psychometric & Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the four components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the LA private school context.
