Nashville Public High School Elite College Placement Index
An objective, data-driven analysis of public high schools in the Nashville Area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.
The Nashville Area's Educational Landscape
The Nashville metropolitan area, the booming heart of Middle Tennessee, offers a vibrant and highly competitive public education landscape. The story of elite college placement is overwhelmingly centered in Williamson County, an affluent suburban enclave south of the city that is home to some of the highest-performing school districts in the nation. These schools consistently dominate state and national rankings and serve as powerful pipelines to top-tier universities. Complementing this suburban powerhouse are several strong magnet schools within Metro Nashville Public Schools and high-achieving comprehensive high schools in surrounding counties like Sumner and Rutherford. This creates a dynamic, albeit stratified, environment for families seeking the best educational pathways in the region.

Data Sources & References
This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns. Due to the lack of a centralized reporting system, no single source is complete. Our model is based on a combination of the following:
Primary Data Sources
- Publicly Available School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed data comes from high-achieving high schools and districts that voluntarily compile and publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations.
- Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) Report Cards: Provides foundational data on school demographics, graduation rates, ACT scores, and other postsecondary readiness indicators.
- University System Data: Public data from university systems like the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University on applications, admissions, and enrollments from Tennessee high schools.
Secondary & Supporting Sources
- Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms like Niche.com and U.S. News compile data from various sources, including user surveys and public records. This data is used for cross-referencing and modeling, particularly for out-of-state and private university placements.
Important Disclaimer
All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's demographic profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2025 period.
ECPI Score Components & Weighting
The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- T25 National University Matriculation (35%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
- T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (15%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
- Top In-State University Matriculation (20%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending the University of Tennessee-Knoxville or Vanderbilt University.
- Other 4-Year University Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending other four-year universities.
- College Readiness Score (20%): Based on an internal score reflecting ACT/SAT scores and AP/IB course participation and success.
Psychometric Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools. Each school's raw score is scaled between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial weighted ECPI score, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall regional average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Nashville context.
Disclaimer: This index is for informational purposes only. It is one of many tools parents and students can use to evaluate schools. We encourage families to consider a wide range of factors, including school culture, program offerings, and individual student needs.
