New York City Public High School Elite College Placement Index
An objective, data-driven analysis of NYC public high schools. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.
The NYC & Tri-State Public School Landscape
New York City is home to the largest public school system in the United States, anchored by renowned Specialized High Schools—such as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech—that act as academic powerhouses. However, educational excellence extends far beyond the five boroughs into the broader Tri-State area. Neighboring regions in New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester, and Connecticut boast some of the nation's most well-resourced traditional public schools and elite county magnet programs. Together, this expansive metropolitan landscape offers a diverse array of highly competitive pathways, sending a massive volume of graduates to top-tier universities each year.

Data Sources & References
This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns. Due to the lack of centralized, granular reporting in New York, no single source is complete. Our model is based on a combination of the following:
Primary Data Sources
- NYC Department of Education (DOE) Postsecondary Enrollment Data: Provides reliable, aggregate statistics on enrollments from every high school and district in the city into CUNY and SUNY systems. This is the primary source for all CUNY/SUNY-related metrics.
- Publicly Available School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed data for T25/T15LAC and specific out-of-state placements comes from high-achieving high schools and districts that voluntarily compile and publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations (e.g., Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Midwood).
Secondary & Supporting Sources
- Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms like Niche.com and U.S. News & World Report compile data from various sources. This data is used for cross-referencing and modeling, particularly for schools that do not publish their own detailed matriculation lists.
- New York State Education Department (NYSED): Provides foundational data on school demographics, graduation rates, and Regents exam performance, which are used to contextualize matriculation outcomes and inform the College Readiness score.
Disclaimer: All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2026 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. Families should always consult a school's official profile for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Rating Methodology
Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2026 period.
ECPI Score Components & Weighting
The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- T25 National University Matriculation (40%): Based on the estimated percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
- T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (30%): Based on the estimated percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
- CUNY 4-Year Matriculation (5%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending any CUNY baccalaureate program.
- SUNY 4-Year Matriculation (5%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending any SUNY 4-year institution.
- College Readiness Score (20%): An internal score reflecting graduation rates, Regents performance, and AP/IB participation rates.
Psychometric & Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100 to standardize performance relative to peers.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we calculate the mean of all these scores across all schools. We then apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70.
