New York City Private High School Elite College Placement Index

An objective, data-driven analysis of NYC private high schools. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.

The NYC Private School Landscape

New York City is home to one of the most prestigious and competitive private high school landscapes in the world. This ecosystem is dominated by a group of elite, academically rigorous independent day schools, primarily concentrated in Manhattan and the Bronx. These institutions, often referred to as the "Ivy Prep" schools, are powerful feeders to the nation's most selective universities. The city also boasts a strong network of Catholic high schools with long traditions of academic and athletic excellence. Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) highlights the clear dominance of the top-tier independent schools, which consistently achieve outstanding college placement results.

Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple public sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for NYC's private schools. Unlike the public school system, there is no centralized reporting agency for private school outcomes.

Primary Data Sources

  • Official School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most reliable data comes directly from the schools themselves. Many of New York's top private schools publish annual school profiles or multi-year matriculation lists on their websites.
  • School Newspapers and Parent Association Communications: Publications like the Horace Mann Record or parent association newsletters often report on college placement outcomes.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms like Niche.com, PolarisList, and Private School Review compile data from various sources.
  • The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES): Provides foundational data on school enrollment, size, and location.

Important Disclaimer

All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. Matriculation percentages and top destinations are synthesized estimates based on publicly available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless a direct source is cited.

Rating Methodology

Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) for private schools is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing and placing students in top-tier higher education institutions.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability. The weighting is designed to heavily favor placement at the most selective universities in the country.

  • Ivy League+ Matriculation (30%): Based on the estimated percentage of graduates attending an Ivy League institution, plus Stanford, MIT, UChicago, and Duke.
  • T25 National University Matriculation (20%): Based on the estimated percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University (as ranked by U.S. News).
  • T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (20%): Based on the estimated percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
  • NYS Top Schools Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending top-tier NYS institutions.
  • College Readiness Score (20%): An internal score reflecting average SAT/ACT scores, AP/IB participation, and academic reputation.

Psychometric & Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70.
