Philadelphia Private High School Elite College Placement Index

An objective, data-driven analysis of private high schools in the Philadelphia Area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.

The Philadelphia Area's Private School Landscape

The Philadelphia metropolitan area is home to one of the oldest, most prestigious, and competitive private school landscapes in the United States. Steeped in history, the region's elite institutions include the storied members of the Inter-Academic League, nationally recognized Quaker (Friends) schools, and a robust network of Catholic schools. These schools are defined by their rigorous college-preparatory curricula, extensive resources, and powerful alumni networks, consistently placing graduates into the Ivy League and other top-tier universities at rates that rival the best schools in the nation. This index provides a quantitative look at their performance in this elite arena.

Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for private schools. Data for private institutions is not centrally reported, making direct comparisons challenging. Our model is based on a combination of the following:

Primary Data Sources

  • School-Published Matriculation Lists & Profiles: The most reliable data comes from schools that voluntarily publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations on their websites or in school profiles. These are the primary source for our top-tier placement data.
  • Accreditation Body Reports: Data from organizations like the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and regional accreditors often provide aggregated data on college readiness and matriculation trends.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms compiling data from various sources (e.g., surveys, self-reports) are used for cross-referencing and modeling.
  • Publicly Available College Data: Information from universities about their incoming freshman classes can sometimes be used to estimate placements from specific feeder schools.

Important Disclaimer

All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2026 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers, percentages, and top destinations are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with admissions officers and counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Rating Methodology

Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2026 period.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.

  • T25 National University Matriculation (35%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (15%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
  • Top In-State University Matriculation (20%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending Penn State (University Park), University of Pittsburgh, or Temple University.
  • Other 4-Year University Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending other four-year universities.
  • College Readiness Score (20%): Based on an internal score reflecting AP/IB participation, average test scores (SAT/ACT), and strength of curriculum.

Psychometric & Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the five components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools in our database. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Philadelphia context.
