Seattle Private High School Elite College Placement Index

An objective, data-driven analysis of private high schools in the Seattle Area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.

The Seattle Area's Private School Landscape

The Seattle metropolitan area, a global hub for technology and innovation, boasts a highly competitive and nationally recognized private education system that rivals its strong public school counterparts. The landscape is defined by a collection of elite, non-sectarian preparatory schools with national reputations, particularly on the Eastside and in North Seattle. These institutions, fueled by the region's booming tech economy, have created a hyper-competitive academic environment and serve as formidable pipelines to elite universities. This is complemented by a strong and influential network of Catholic and independent schools throughout the region, creating a dynamic and choice-rich, albeit highly stratified, educational landscape for families in the Puget Sound region.

Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns for private schools. Due to the varied reporting standards among private institutions, our model is based on a combination of the following:

Primary Data Sources

  • Publicly Available School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed data comes from high-achieving private schools that voluntarily compile and publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations on their websites.
  • School-Reported Data: Information gathered from school viewbooks, annual reports, and direct communication with admissions offices.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms compiling data from various sources (e.g., surveys, self-reports) are used for cross-referencing and modeling.
  • National Center for Education Statistics (NCES): Provides foundational data on school demographics, enrollment, and accreditation.

Important Disclaimer

All data presented on this website is illustrative and for modeling purposes only, reflecting the 2020-2025 period. The list of schools is representative, not exhaustive. The matriculation numbers and percentages are synthesized estimates designed to reflect likely outcomes based on a school's profile and available data. They are not official, verified counts from the schools themselves unless otherwise noted. Families should always consult a school's official profile and speak with school counselors for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Rating Methodology

Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2025 period.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of five components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.

  • T25 National University Matriculation (35%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (15%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
  • Top In-State University Matriculation (20%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending the University of Washington.
  • Other 4-Year University Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending other four-year universities.
  • College Readiness Score (20%): Based on an internal score reflecting average SAT/ACT scores, AP/IB course offerings, and college counseling resources.

Psychometric & Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each component, we analyze the range of scores. Each school's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100 relative to peers.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial ECPI score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Seattle private school context.
