Bay Area Public High School Elite College Placement Index

An objective, data-driven analysis of public high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. We use a proprietary Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) to evaluate schools based on graduate outcomes and college readiness.

The Bay Area's Educational Landscape

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to some of the nation's most competitive and high-performing public high schools. Fueled by the innovation of Silicon Valley and a highly-educated populace, the region's schools consistently rank among the best in California and the United States. This landscape is characterized by a stark performance gap between affluent suburban districts, which function as powerful feeders to elite universities, and urban districts facing greater socioeconomic challenges. Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) reveals a clear hierarchy, with schools in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties dominating the top tiers.

Data Sources & References

This project synthesizes data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive, illustrative model of college matriculation patterns. Due to the lack of a centralized reporting system in California, no single source is complete. Our model is based on a combination of the following:

Primary Data Sources

  • Publicly Available School Profiles & Matriculation Lists: The most detailed data comes from high-achieving high schools and districts that voluntarily compile and publish multi-year lists of their graduates' college destinations. These are the gold standard for specific placements but are not universally available.
  • University of California Information Center: The UC system's public data portal provides reliable, aggregate statistics on applications, admissions, and enrollments from every high school and district in the state. This is the primary source for all UC-related metrics.
  • California State University (CSU) Analytic Studies: The CSU system provides public data on enrollment trends from California high schools, which is used to model matriculation to the 23 CSU campuses.
  • California Department of Education - DataQuest: Provides foundational data on school demographics, graduation rates, and A-G course completion rates, which are used to contextualize matriculation outcomes.

Secondary & Supporting Sources

  • Third-Party Data Aggregators: Platforms like Niche.com and U.S. News compile data from various sources, including user surveys and public records. This is used for cross-referencing and modeling, particularly for out-of-state and private placements.
  • Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE): Provides data and projections on high school graduate numbers and college-going trends.

Rating Methodology

Our Elite College Placement Index (ECPI) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a school's success in preparing students for higher education. The data is illustrative, based on publicly available school profiles and statistical modeling for the 2020-2026 period.

ECPI Score Components & Weighting

The total ECPI score is a weighted average of four components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.

  • T25 National University Matriculation (45%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 25 National University.
  • T15 Liberal Arts College Matriculation (25%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending a Top 15 Liberal Arts College.
  • Other UC System Matriculation (10%): Based on the percentage of graduates attending any University of California campus (excluding UC Berkeley and UCLA).
  • College Readiness Score (20%): Based on an internal score reflecting AP/IB rates and average test scores.

Psychometric Mean Scaling

A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:

  1. Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the four components, we analyze the range of scores across all schools. Each school's raw score is scaled between 0 and 100. This converts raw data into a standardized measure of performance relative to peers.
  2. Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial weighted ECPI score, we apply a linear adjustment to every school's score to shift the overall regional average to a target of 70. This makes 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Bay Area.

Disclaimer: This index is for informational purposes only. It is one of many tools parents and students can use to evaluate schools. We encourage families to consider a wide range of tools to learn about school culture, program offerings, and individual student needs.
